All About Period Cramps!!

Updated: Mar 22, 2023

Period cramps. Yes, I know... we all hate to think about it. But did you know that our monthly "friend" has a very weird name? They are also known as dysmenorrhea... who remembers that from a biology class, my mom never told me :-). But one thing I am sure, we all know a lot about the most common symptom experienced by a lot of us during our menstrual cycles.

These cramps can range from mild to severe and can be accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, bloating, and headaches.

There are two types of dysmenorrhea:

  • Primary dysmenorrhea is the most common type and is caused by the contraction of the uterus during menstruation. This contraction is caused by the release of prostaglandins, hormones that play a role in causing pain and inflammation.

  • Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by an underlying condition, such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease, and can be more severe and long-lasting than primary dysmenorrhea.

Treatment options for period cramps include over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and naproxen, birth control pills to regulate hormone levels, and heating pads to help relax the muscles of the uterus. In some cases, prescription pain medication may be necessary.

There are also a few lifestyle changes that can help reduce the severity of period cramps. Exercising regularly can help to reduce cramps and improve overall physical and mental well-being. Additionally, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress levels can all help to minimize the symptoms of dysmenorrhea.

It is important to note that if you experience severe or persistent cramps, or if your cramps are accompanied by other symptoms such as heavy bleeding, fever, or vomiting, you should consult with a healthcare professional. These symptoms may indicate a more serious underlying condition that requires medical attention.
